Upper Playground’s finest Sam Flores just posted this piece up on his blog. Good tribute. Doubt a toy would come out with this, but how cool would that be.
At the last minute I decided to head out to Barcelona to check out Bread & Butter and the surrounding festivities, namely Dave White’s “The Court’s a Battlefield” exhibition. Unfortunately I was a bit too busy enjoying my trip to capture everything but thankfully the infamous BothanSpynet held down the extensive coverage. I’ve hijacked some of the relevant pics but you should check out thebothanspy.net for the full rundown.

From the Anti-Advertising Agency
Advertising is the vandalism of the Fortune 500. And despite that, we still don’t like it.
Between October 2006 and December 2006, the City of New York has removed or obscured 59 illegal banners on sidewalk sheds. In that same period, Citibank was forced to remove all illegal sidewalk projections at branches around Manhattan. And now, years into NYC’s crackdown on graffiti writers and protesters, after we’ve watched our friends be detained, arrested, beat, fined, tried, and given real jail sentences, not a single corporate toy from any ad firm has had to do any time.
This could mean only one thing. They’ve called off the law. Open City. Let’s all get to work.
This is the first collaboration between the Anti-Advertising Agency and Graffiti Research Lab. Modified from Ji Lee’s Abstractor TV. We used black foam core ($10/sheet) cut with a laser cutter - however, this project can be done with an x-acto blade, black construction paper, and duct tape for next to nothing. It can be repeated using any backlit display - bus shelters, display ads, television store windows… dream big, act now.

Eboy have released a new poster with all sorts of web 2.0 logos in their pixel-style. Where’s Waldo geek style. Buy one today.
I went to Prairie Avenue Bookshop and saw the Tres Logos, a book I preordered 2 months prior. I was excited to see the vibrant blue-colored book on a pedestal, rushed to it and spent about 40 minutes flipping through the pages. Some artist return such as 123 Klan and hydro74, but the logos that stood out to me were the ones created by a design firm called Team Manila, which was introduced to one of my coworkers. One of the reasons they stood out was that the logos had the words “Pinoy” or “Pinay” and a very stylized rooster head reminiscing of my dad taking me to cock fights when I was a young buck. Secondly, I didn’t realize that the growth of graphic design firms were being established in the Philippines and I was proud of that they were setting an example to the people of the Philippines that they do not just have to be nurses or doctors to become successful people. Everything We Shoot is the company I knew about before Team Manila.
I also noticed some pieces from The KDU noting Aerosyn-Lex. Big ups to you Lex.
Anyway, if you’ve got the scrill I suggest purchasing this book. It’s available for a good price in Amazon. Holla!
While i feel microsoft’s zune is completely inferior to the ipod they did make this sweet website with a bunch of awesome videos and pieces from the likes of tokyo plastic and jeremy fish etc.

Montréal hometown heroes D-Structure recently opened up a shop/gallery in San Francisco, marking their third shop to date and the first outside of Canada. The shop, aptly known as DSI, hosted a gallery show for artist extraordinaire Arlo Eisenberg, who I might add, hooked the place up proper with an extravagant mural.

Nice clean site from director Joseph Kosinski, formerly of KDLAB. Some amazingly realistic as well as beautifully stylized 3d often times composited with live action footage. Well worth a look.

This sucker has been a long time coming, while the bouncing balls spot hit me a bit more emotionally (can a commercial for a tv hit you emotionally especially the 180 second version) the second spot for the color like no other campaign just doesn’t hit home for me on repeat views. It has the staying power of a flopping fish, while I can pretty much re-watch the balls spot over and over again. Maybe they tried to hard, maybe paint just doesn’t have the same personality that the balls do, maybe exploding paint looks more like a technical excursus than the pitching a couple thousand balls down a hill in SF, maybe I’m jaded I dunno I just think its a flash in the pan while the latter was pure genius.

Some of you probably already know about HYDRO 74, but for those who dont, this is digital illustration at it’s finest (in my opinion) not really much more to be said except check it out.

Banksy, Banksy, Banksy. He’s been causing a ruckus all over the place.. possibly leading to his show. My cousin called me up on Sunday just to tell me that the line had been about a block or two long just to go see the show. From the looks of it, it looks worth it.
Peep game via Vinyl Pulse
..also, if that’s not enough Banksy for you, he’s on the new issue of Swindler.
*Just found this. Shepard talking about Banksy down on Melrose.*

Holla at cha boy for hitting up Disneyland in one of the most appropriate dates in American History.

New stuff coming up from Chuck Anderson of NoPattern. September 5th marks the relaunch date for his website, as well as some new things in the form of books and prints. I’m totally excited to see the new work! You will be too!
NoPattern

The Brilliance’s Chuck Anderson has put glow on the map. For those who don’t know, he’s responsible for the new Less Than Jake album cover, the Supra ads as well as the SVSV ads. Well the glow is back and is now featured in my Chicago neighbor Lupe Fiasco’s album coming out September…finally!
