Pharrel a PC = everybody ha$ a price

I usually dont do this kind of thing round here but I’m really amused at what money can do for people.

So first Jerry and now Pharrell. Both people bought up by the big old Micro$oft to shell windows to people. I’m honestly all for celebrity endorsements, but lets be truthful here people. Jerry had a mac on his desk for every single episode of Seinfeld. Its a god dammned trivia question for chrissakes. And now this new microsoft commercial “i’m a PC” Pharrell from N.E.R.D. says hes a PC when he makes a living by making music on a mac, has a golden iphone? I’m going to go out on a limb and say that he doesnt use a PC as an everyday machine, but that money made him appear to be a PC in a commercial to get the wing vote for PC’s on the younger folk.

I’m pretty sure in both photos below that Pharrell is rocking a mac. But then again you can judge that.

pretty sure thats an apple keyboard and mouse, nevermind that mac laptop in the background.

apple monitor … check

OSX screen saver running on a PC? … proly not.

Haha, Pharrel is silly. I’ve known he’s been on a Mac since I can remember. But money is money. Microsoft is trying everything they can to stop Apple from taking over in the following years.

of course, mac is a creative machine – creative people use it! no one wants ken bernake to endorse their product, protools, logic all that, a mac. numbers, spreadsheets (yawn!) a pc. i am sure that pharell’s accountant uses a pc and money is important. besides those are HP not Microsoft commercials.

    in response to d,
check out the link to “i’m a PC” from the article above. those are clearly MS commercials, but yes pharrel has done HP commercials as well.

    in response to the article,
so what does this tell us about pharrel? that he can be bought? i think not. i’m sure pharrel never had to sign a waiver when he purchased all of his MAC gear that said “you cannot endorse any other product” so there’s nothing to be bought. he’s just doing what he wants and at the same time exercising his business savvy. get paid to use a MAC by MS! wish i was so lucky!

p.s. just in case, if he indeed did sign some kind of waiver or contract, then i stand corrected.

People don’t seem to get it do they? The I’m a MAc, I’m a PC thing is using people to represent the computers, not the users.

Also, most really good music technitians and musicians use MACs (they always have done), Mac allow them to get on with the job instead of always having to mess with the system just to keep it running.

So its no suprise to me Pharrell uses a MAC.

I’m not the most knowledgeable person in the world on this subject, but what I’ve never understood is the people who preach about open source seem to be the same people who preach about macs, but macs are like anti-open source, Apple has a monopoly on them, where with “PC” everyone can make them.

  7. 7 Tom

Alan, I wouldn’t consult in logical debate with these people. They probably don’t even know what open source is, never mind that apple just alters free operating systems and makes people pay for them after their own one got left behind. Seriously the writer of this article actually writes ‘Micro$oft’ which is more evidence to suggest that the author has down syndrome than the pics of pharrel not using macs suggest that he uses macs. All the posts after this article are like ‘of course, mac is a creative machine – creative people use it!’ – this proves their stupidity. Every bit of creative software (no, Rockband doesn’t count) you get on macs you get a better equivalent on windows – just because you’ve never used SADIE etc. and that microsoft can actually write office and server software, that doesn’t mean that’s all they do.
Apple, for people with big pockets and small brains. Enjoy.

Oh and Mr vs. – that would be irony if the vast majority of pictures from that particular ad campaign weren’t made on windows and if apple employees didn’t use windows, but as it is.. it is nothing.

I dunno I just think that you need to be true to yourself and put that forward. if you use a mac on a daily basis to make money and most likely use a mac outside of that as your day to day machine then your doing yourself a falsehood to be in a PC commercial. I guess I just feel that people need to be honest in what they represent money or not.

to alan: actually in the 90′s there were apple clones that ran the mac OS and ran on inferior hardware, they sold out licences to 3rd party hardware companies when times were tough (read: after they fired steve jobs) one of the things that happened when apple began the turnaround is they killed off the clone market and were then the true hardware and software developers. This in turn lets you run a tighter ship with regards to quality of OS, and quality of hardware and chipset. sure its a bit more costly but you know that the components are built to work together….

thats how I see it, anyway I’d rather have that than be stuck buying into a PC.

v- they have apparently ripped out the meta data and further bloating the filesize of said assets…. love it.

tom > great to know I have downs for using a typographical example of the prowess of Microsofts bank account.

I guess like I said in an earlier comment is essentially that personally I would rather not take the cheque to pose as a PC when I know damn well I make a living off the opposite computer. Matter of fact I used to use a PC right next to my mac and I didnt enjoy the experience at all. I’ll go on record that I dont do office software if I dont have too, do I use it out of function yes but do I enjoy it no… half the time I copy the contents of word documents out and use text edit cause its faster. Do I have an office suite installed on my personal machine? yup its iwork cause it does the tricks I need it too and doesnt have the install overhead or flakeyness of its Microsoft counterpart.

I’m well aware that adobe makes software for various platforms but I’m a mac guy through and through, your comments about SADIe (which I would more than gladly learn about from you ) and your characterization of me being a downs suffer (thanks again) wont change the fact that I’ll always be a mac guy.

as for having big pockets and small brains, each to their own I suppose if I’m happy where I am financially able to own such extravagant things as mac computers and ipods and iphones with such a small brain then I suppose I’m doing fine by my own standards, plus I’m sure everybody that uses a mac is small brained by your comment and to be lumped so graciously in with those people means at least I’ll have some company.

    cheers

    Hey Tom,

I thought I’d shed some light on the statement you made about Macs as “creative machines”:

Every bit of creative software (no, Rockband doesn’t count) you get on macs you get a better equivalent on windows – just because you’ve never used SADIE etc. and that microsoft can actually write office and server software, that doesn’t mean that’s all they do.
Apple, for people with big pockets and small brains. Enjoy.

The reason Apple has this reputation is because from the get go they made this a priority. Apple invented System 7 sound, which was the audio format that made it possible to produce music digitally, before that it was still just tape to tape.

Apple also partnered with Adobe in the development of Postscript fonts, where as Microsoft gave Adobe the finger and developed TrueType. Postscript was a really big deal back in the day when it came to printing and getting crisp results (the output to plates and films would be much crisper using postscript because it would reinterpret vector data multiple times, truetype was made to look nice on screen and not for print).

As a result of giving the finger to postscript Microsoft sorely hindered what typefaces their users could use to this day.

Combined with the color matching software built into OS X, and the suite of digital production tools (Apple invented firewire afterall, making it possible to edit digital video on a computer), Apple has alwaaaaays been on the forefront of offering tech for “creative professionals.”

I use both Macs and PCs in my studio, doing a lot of orchestration with large sample libraries. Macs are really king of the hill when it comes to audio these days. Apple made it a priority, and the kernel level audio and MIDI processing they built into OSX (Core Audio and Core MIDI) are extremely well designed for low latency performance. Also, OSX allows music producers to utilize a lot more RAM, which is important for those wanting to load a lot of sample content. Today, I would not consider buying a PC for high end audio use. Sure, you could have a boutique shop cobble together a custom PC that would work well, but why not just buy a powerful stock Mac Intel tower that works great right out of the box?

Very good post. I’ve found your site via Yahoo and I’m really glad about the information you provide in your posts. Btw your blogs layout is really broken on the Chrome browser. Would be great if you could fix that. Anyhow keep up the great work!
